Scum Frog: A Best Topwater Bait for Bass, Southern Lure
In the spring and summer, largemouth bass are active and aggressive, and will readily pounce on surface lures and topwater baits.

Topwater baits are some of the most fun lures to throw for bass in summer. When bass are feeding on schools of baitfish, on insects, or on frogs, they will happily explode on any lure moving across the surface nearby. Following are some of the best topwater baits for bass.

The Rebel Pop-R Popper

This is one of the most basic and productive poppers for bass. Use this lure around lily pads, brush, logs, or any structure, or slowly work it through the shallows when fish are busting insects, minnows, or frogs, and likely the Pop-R will produce. When there is an abundance of grass or algae in the water, this lure is not recommended. However, when conditions are right, this popper can be one of the very best surface lures to use for largemouth bass.

Rapala Original floater Crankbait: One of the Best Topwater Baits for Bass

Arguably the very best crankbait for bass, the Rapala original floater is light, easy to use, and durable. This lure stays on the surface, and will not dive more than a few inches even when reeled hard. Fishing this lure in shallow to medium depth water, and reeling slowly and steadily is the best way to use it. Although natural colored baits (such as those in shades of brown, olive, gray, and in black) are best most of the time, this lure in the fire tiger color pattern (chartreuse, orange, and black), as well as in the silver, the gold, and the perch color arrangements is very productive.

Scum Frog, a Top Surface Lure for Bass

One of the best surface lures to use for bass, the scum frog by Southern Lure company is very fun to use, and also very productive. This lure should be used around the edges of ponds and lakes for largemouth bass. Because its hooks ride up, the lure may be dragged across lily pads without snagging, making it an invaluable frog imitation at times. Black, pumpkin seed, and watermelon seed are the best color arrangements that this lure comes in. It is important to work the scum frog very slow by twitching the rod gently every so often, and then slow reeling the slack. Anywhere that frogs are liable to be in a pond or lake is a great place to cast this bait.

Topwater baits are great fun to use in the summer, because not only are they productive, but bass will often put on explosive aerial shows as they leap from the water with the lures in their mouths as they strike.
